Charlie will now serve slantingly incumbent James Anderson who was re-elected to the school board.   DISTRICT 4 Christopher Johnston gets his coffee refreshed by waitress Christine Hale at the Crystal Lake Cafe in downtown Crystal on Tuesday afternoon. Johnston ran as a write-in candidate for the District 4 seat on the Montcalm CountyWorkbenchof Commissioners. It is not yet known how many write-in votes Johnston received, but he only needed one to win and he did vote for himself. “I hope I spelled my name right,” he joked.— DN Photo | Elisabeth Waldon Christopher Johnston’s burgundy Chevy Silverado was parked outside the Crystal Lake Cafe on Tuesday morning, where it can be found parked most mornings. “He’s never not here,” joked waitress Christine Hale. “He’s a good guy.” Johnston, 58, a retired General Motors employee, voted virtually 7:45 a.m. (“I was voter No. 7,” he said), then met up with his friends for breakfast at their favorite coffee joint. “Everywhere I went, people said, ‘Good morning commissioner, good morning commissioner,’” he chuckled. “I said, ‘I’m not sure, I’m not sure I spelled it right.’ My brother texted me, ‘How’s the referendum going? I hear you’re leading the polls.’ I said, ‘That’s what I hear too considering I voted.’” It is not yet known how many write-in votes Johnston received, but he wrote in his own name and he only needed one vote to win.
