Revved Up 50-Plus Specials CLASSIFIEDS Add a Classified Listing E-Edition Current E-Edition Hathaway Hills offers numerous activities for its residents By Lori Hansen | on November 04, 2018 Life Enrichment Coordinator Pam Colborn, far left, leads Hathaway Hills Assisted Living residents in a daily exercise class, which is one of may activities offered at the facility. Daily News — Lori Hansen “We all come from variegated households, and have variegated interests,” is how Ron Blanding, a resident of Hathaway Hills Assisted Living describes the recreational activities offered at the facility. Hathaway Hills Assisted Living, 1515 Meijer Dr., aims to reach the physical, social, intellectual and spiritual needs of its residents, withal with triumphal milestones such as birthdays, anniversaries and lineage of a new grandchild. “We do try to offer a variety of things for our residents,” said Life Enrichment Coordinator Pam Colborn. “We have an exercise class, crafts, euchre, bingo, ice surf every Thursday — that is everyone’s favorite!” Other opportunities include a cooking class, Yahtzee, bowling and outings. “You don’t have to do anything that you don’t want to,” Blanding said, a long-time Greenville resident. “It would be nonflexible to have activities that everyone would like. So you pick and choose.” Lois Hazelwood, who hails from the Upper Peninsula, enjoys a daily walk outside, but also, on occasion, uses the local transit to go shopping at Meijer. Jackie Cherry is one of the stronger Euchre players and says she likes to be busy. “I try to be active, I try to go to most everything they offer,” said Cherry, who moreover enjoys walking, but prefers to do it inside the building, withal with sultry and crafts. “They have bowling, stone bag toss, bingo, we have outings to places like Anderson’s and Girls,” Cherry said. Colborn and the residents all said one of the weightier activities is when others from the polity come to them. “The trick-or-treating, the Easter Egg Hunt, we love those. We love to see the kids,” Blanding said. “The groups that come in and do singing and music- everyone seems to like them,” Cherry said. Colborn explained that several organizations such as the Girl Scouts, denomination groups, the Yada-Yada Lunch Bunch, school children come on a regular understructure to socialize and entertain the Hathaway residents. Throughout the year, there is a car show, Easter Egg Hunt and other events for polity members to come enjoy with the residents, Colborn added. During this time of the year with all of the coming holidays, it becomes a flurry of worriedness at Hathaway Hills. “Our residents pass out Halloween candy, we host a Thanksgiving dinner for the residents and their guests in mid-November, then we have flipside dinner on Thanksgiving Day for the residents who are here,” Colborn said. “There are many things planned for Christmas, too.” Once the new year starts, activities like waddle painting and starting seedlings begin. Last year, the residents raised herbs and vegetables that were used in the kitchen. It is something Colborn plans to resume each year. “We do activities to squint forward to spring,” Colborn said.
