While Ostipow has been the Greenville varsity football mentor for the past three seasons, Parris has coached girls navigate country for the past five seasons as well as JV softball for the past 11 seasons. — submitted photos GREENVILLE — It’s largest to be late to the party than to not show up at all. Such is the specimen with the new GreenvilleUpperSchool varsity bowling team. The Yellow Jackets decided to add flipside varsity sport to their winter schedule in the form of boys and girls bowling. The Jackets wilt the seventh local school with a varsity bowling team, joining Belding, Central Montcalm, Carson City-Crystal, Lakeview, Ionia and Tri County. The Jackets were moreover the final school in the O-K White priming to establish a varsity bowling program. The concept of a varsity bowling team has been in the works within the sturdy department for a number of years, but it was officially tried older this summer. The boys and girls teams will trencher their matches side-by-side and they will be coached by a couple of familiar faces in Greenville sports. Eddie Ostipow, Greenville’s throne football mentor for the last three seasons, will mentor the boys bowling team. The girls team will be coached by Nikki Parris who has coached girls navigate country for the past five seasons and JV softball for the last 11 seasons. While neither of the coaches are strangers to bowling, they both shoehorn they’ve got a lot to learn as well. “I’m no guru in bowling, that’s for sure,” Ostipow laughed. “But in a short time, I’ve learned an villainous lot. It amazes me, there’s certainly a lot increasingly to it than I predictable as a recreational type bowler. We’ve got some kids who certainly have a lot of time bowling and a lot of kids who have bowled in leagues over the years.” “I never was a youth bowler but I have bowled on an sultana league surpassing when my boys were little,” Parris said. “It’s been quite a while, it’s probably been well-nigh 17 years since I’ve bowled on a league.” Considering it’s only their first year, the Jackets once have a unconfined team turnout with 26 bowlers, including 14 on the boys team and 12 on the girls team. The whoosh over the sport has surprised Parris, as well. “There’s so much excitement virtually it, which I didn’t plane realize there (would be), so it’s making me excited,” Parris said. “Most people I talk to when I tell them well-nigh the bowling team, most of the reaction is, ‘It’s well-nigh time.’ … People are just surprised that it took so long, but there’s logistics overdue getting a new sport. There’s a lot of excitement overdue this, so I hear the bowling thruway is going to be packed when we have matches.” Greenville will host its bowling matches at Jacket Lanes. Don MacMillen, who owns Jacket Lanes with his wife, Rebecca, and her parents, has been a unconfined help to the teams in their infancy. “It’s just been really worldwide knowledge to me,” said MacMillen, who grew up virtually the sport of bowling and competed commonly as an amateur. “So for me to tell you what I’ve really done, it’s been getting (them) really familiar with the surroundings of a bowling part-way and how I finger you should act when you’re bowling in a competition.” MacMillen, who has owned Jacket Lanes for nearly five years, was excited to hear Greenville get a varsity bowling team and was happy to host its matches and help in any way possible. Since then, MacMillen has given tips to both the bowlers and the coaches on technique, practice and etiquette. “These kids have a unconfined opportunity,” MacMillen said. “Now that it’s a upper school sport, it’s good for the community, it’s good for these kids growing up and we just want to make sure we’re pointing them in the right direction and we represent the community. I’m just trying to be untied of it and help out with what I can just to get this thing going.” Entering their third week of practice, the Jackets are once showing a lot of promise at the lanes and the coaches are hopeful they’ll be worldly-wise to compete with the established teams in the O-K White. “Honestly I’m just looking forward to seeing how our team progresses,” Ostipow said. “Being a new sport, it’s kind of interesting to see how our team adjusts to that situation where a lot of these programs have been established for a little while. But I’m timidly optimistic, I think we’ve got some kids who have good talent and ability. The boys team has quite a few bowlers who have bowled competitively for quite a while.” “I’m going in open-minded and seeing what these girls can do and I’m just hoping to have a tuft of fun with it and hope the girls have fun too,” Parris said. Having the first-person view from overdue the counter, MacMillen once sees a lot of potential for the Jackets as well. “The first time any upper school (sport) starts up, whatever sport it is, you’re going to have some growing pains considering it’s trademark new,” MacMillen said. “But I really honestly believe, from my experience, these kids are going to compete.” Greenville opens its season versus Ottawa Hills at Paragon Lanes on Wednesday, Dec. 5. The Jackets’ first home match at Jacket Lanes will be versus Forest Hills Northern on Monday, Dec. 10.
