The boys basketball season tipped off last night and Tri County’s first test would be versus nearby rival, Lakeview. The Vikings came out warlike and determined, but ultimately lost to the increasingly experienced Wildcats team, 45-39. It wasn’t without a fight, however, and Lakeview throne mentor Pete Wurm knew it’d be a fight when the Vikings led 16-8 at the end of the first quarter. “It was a good defensive effort on Tri County’s part,” Wurm said. “It’s nothing versus Tri County, but I’m just wondering if we could have cut lanugo on some of those (turnovers), plane five of them, if we have those possessions back, how much could we have unquestionably won this game by?” The Wildcats cut the deficit to two points by halftime as the Vikings entered the locker room with the lead. First year Vikings throne mentor Matt McCorkle, who previously coached varsity basketball at Grant, felt unconfined well-nigh his team’s play early on. “We were trying to switch up some defenses on them to make them uncomfortable,” McCorkle said. “Unfortunately, we haven’t had a lot of time together, I didn’t have the opportunity to have a summer program or anything since I got hired on so late in the fall. This is our fourth week together.” With the cards stacked versus his team, McCorkle and the Vikings unfurled to fight throughout the second half, but the Wildcats slowly made the takeoff to the lead, executive most of the fourth quarter, but not by much. Given the team’s inexperience in tropical games, it was a nonflexible ask for McCorkle’s team to defeat Lakeview lanugo the stretch. Tri County sophomore Cameren Friend splits through Lakeview defenders Brien Keene, left, and Jackson Lockwood, right, surpassing putting up a layup struggle during Tri County’s 45-39 loss to Lakeview on Tuesday. Friend led all scorers with 22 points on the night. — DN Photo | Alex Freeman “I think given the history of what Tri County basketball has been for the last few years, some of these kids haven’t been in a game this tropical for a while,” McCorkle said. “That’s a little bit of wits for these guys considering they haven’t been in that in a while so you have to learn how to win and finish.” Wurm gave a large value of credit for his team’s second half turnaround to the defensive effort of junior Jacob Voelker, who drew the task of guarding Tri County senior Bryce Hallman. “I told everybody in the locker room, ‘Everybody owes Jacob a huge hug or a huge upper five,’” Wurm said. “Last year, Bryce Hallman hit everything in the gym. He had 31 points on us last year and was hitting running 15-footers and threes from five feet overdue the line, and he was frustrated tonight. Jacob played wondrous defense, I told him surpassing the game, ‘This is your assignment, stick on him.’ “I haven’t seen that since last summer,” he continued. “So for him to play the type of defense that he did tonight on a kid who really hurt us last year, it really made them squint for other ways to write-up us, and they scrutinizingly did. But Jacob Voelker deserves increasingly credit than everyone who scored tonight, than everyone who rebounded or did anything else for us considering without his defense, we’re not plane in that ballgame.” For the Vikings, McCorkle has been versed on the short history of Tri County basketball and the lows the program has been through. With just one victory in the last two seasons, the last coming on Feb. 28, 2016 versus White Cloud, he knows the cards are stacked versus him and his team, but he’s looking forward to the challenge. Tri County junior Nick Braunschneider puts up a shot while stuff closely guarded by Lakeview junior Hayden Rentschler during Lakeview’s 45-39 victory over Tri County on Tuesday. Braunschneider managed two points, three steals and four rebounds in his varsity debut for the Vikings. — DN Photo | Alex Freeman “I’m trying to transpiration the culture in the sense of we need guys to buy in to play basketball, want to play basketball year-round,” McCorkle said. “We need good attitude, positive soul language and just no excuses. Show up every day and work nonflexible without excuses. Instead of years past where the team is getting squandered out by 30-40 points, I think these guys have unbearable grit, determination, heart and effort that we’re going to be in a lot of games and we’re at least going to requite ourselves an opportunity to win unlike years past.” Wurm was excited to get the victory, plane if it did come with a unconfined deal of stress, but he knows his team still has room to improve. “Tonight was a wake-up call,” Wurm said. “I hope that we learn and mature from it and understand the kind of passes we make and what to do with the wittiness in pressure situations.” The Wildcats were led in scoring by senior Andrew Nummer, who finished with 17 points and three assists. Junior Hayden Rentschler led Lakeview in rebounding with 13 and widow seven points. Senior Brian Keene finished with a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Vikings sophomore Cameren Friend led all scorers with 22 points on the night while subtracting seven rebounds and six steals. Senior Nicholas Poprawski was second on the team in scoring with six points. The Vikings will travel to Sparta for their next game at 7 p.m. Friday. Lakeview will host Newaygo for its next races at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
