Mothers of soldiers, sailors, airmen, seamen and Marines are invited to shepherd a Military Mothers Meet & Greet event on Dec. 11, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the American Legion Post in Greenville, which is stuff hosted by the Ionia, Kent and Montcalm Blue Star Mothers Chapter 118. — Submitted photo Kathy Barnes, president of the Ionia, Kent and Montcalm Blue Star Mothers Chapter 118, is well enlightened of this and wants to help. This year, the Blue Star Mothers will be hosting their first Military Mother Meet & Greet event from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Dec. 11 at the American Legion Post in Greenville. The event is an opportunity for mothers who currently have children serving in the United States military to yack with some members of the Blue Star Mothers well-nigh what they might be going through. “We have moms whose children are currently deployed and won’t be home for Christmas living in our area,” Barnes said. “Some of these moms might have never heard of the Blue Star Mothers before. We’re hoping to get their sustentation through this, letting them know that we’re here and they don’t have to go through this alone.” Mothers are encouraged to bring photos of their soldier, sailor, marine, tailspin guardsman or airman withal with them to the event. “Those who want to shepherd don’t have to worry well-nigh anything,” Barnes said. “All they have to do is come in with a picture of their military child so that we can learn and hear their stories. We want to learn.” Mothers of military veterans may moreover attend, as Barnes knows of the struggles some military members squatter when returning home from deployment. “When veterans return home, it’s a variegated dynamic,” she said. “We know well-nigh those struggles too, and we want to help.” For Brenda Gibson, former Blue Star Mothers president and current member, the Military Mother Meet & Greet event is one that she relates to on a personal level. “On the level of stuff a mom, I know that it’s incredibly difficult not to have a military child home for the holidays — expressly if they’re deployed somewhere hostile or outside of the United States,” she said. “I can personally attest to paying $2,500 for a plane ticket to have my son home on Christmas Eve.” Gibson moreover knows the difference between having a child in the military who won’t be home for Christmas compared to a child who might be yonder at higher for some time. “People often say that their kid is off at higher and it’s nonflexible to be yonder from them, which is true,” she said. “I’ve been there, too. I’ve had a kid in graduate school in Denver while my other kid was deployed at the same time. It’s a completely variegated level of worrying. Not to make light of having a child in college, considering I know that’s hard, but there’s an widow layer of worry and snooping when they’re in the military.” Wanting to be there for others who might be going through a similar situation, Gibson then believes the Military Mother Meet & Greet event is an important one. “We’re here for support, to whatever level might be needed,” she said. “We’re somebody to mutter to, or somebody to cry with.” Admission for the Military Mother Meet & Greet is self-ruling and registration is not required.
