Over the summer, he has been hoeing and harvesting, bringing in crops of cabbage, corn, cucumbers, parsnips, peppers, pumpkins and squash. What is unusual is Leak has been doing this every year for 59 years. “Last year, the garden wasn’t quite so good, so I was unswayable to do largest this year,” said Leak, who will be 79 years old in October. The reason for a lacking a garden last year was considering he was doing carpentry work, helping to build a house for a granddaughter. “I’d spend 12 to 14 hours every day there, and didn’t put in the time in the garden like I had in the past,” he said. “I’ve got increasingly weeds this year to show for it, but I’ll get them.” Leak, and his wife, Joyce, will gloat their 59th wedding year-end on Oct. 31. Joyce doesn’t do much preservation anymore, but she does freeze some of the produce. Most of it though, they shares with family and friends. The pair has three children, eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. “We don’t alimony a lot of it anymore for the two of us — we mostly requite it away,” Leak said. “We requite a lot to the folks at First BaptistDenominationof Sebewa in Lake Odessa.” Whether it a bushel of tomatoes, a bouquet of flowers, or a couple of orange pumpkins, Leak enjoys sharing. “We took a half-bushel of cukes to the (Ionia Free) Fair and set them out in Antique Village with a sign that said free,” he said. “In 45 minutes or so, they were all gone.” The Ionia County Commission on Aging is moreover a recipient of Leak’s fresh fruits and vegetables. “It’s just fun. It’s a lot of work, but it’s moreover fun,” Leak said. “I enjoy it and it helps alimony me healthy. I go out and hoe for 45 minutes to an hour, and then I put the hoe lanugo and throne to work.” Larry Leak of Ionia points out a sweet potato plant growing among his tomatoes, some of the many crops he grows and gives yonder each year. — DN Photo | Lori Hansen Although the family raised dairy cows for 36 years and Leak’s occupation was farming, he milked his last cow in 1996. “We’d unchangingly had cows. The kids were unchangingly teasing for horses, but I said we had unbearable hay-burners, and no horses,” Leak said. “We didn’t need them with the Jerseys.” But no increasingly cows didn’t midpoint retirement. Leak has volunteered as a site manager for 12 Habitat for Humanity homes, helping with construction. He has served as a Sunday School teacher and a deacon at his church. He and Joyce help with the raffle at theSelf-rulingFair’s Antique Village. “People seem to know when to undeniability me — it’s when they need help with a project,” he chuckled.
