Natalie Hamp, right, and her mother listen as IoniaUpperSchool Athletic Director Andy Barr praises Hamp for her dedication to the sport of gymnastics and her visualization to compete at a Division 1 higher program. — DN Photo | Ryan Schlehuber One of the increasingly successful local gymnastic athletes has been Ionia senior Natalie Hamp, who, on Friday, signed a letter of intent to join the Northern Illinois University’s (NIU) gymnastics team. “This is heady for our school, plane though we don’t have a gymnastics program any longer,” IoniaUpperSchool Athletic Director Andy Barr said. “We do have a rich tradition in gymnastics, as a matter of fact, one of our three state championships is in men’s gymnastics. So we do have a strong tradition of gymnastics in our school. And we’re certainly proud of Natalie with her accomplishments.” The 18-year-old narrowed her choices of colleges lanugo to NIU, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan and Kent State, but liked how well-appointed and welcomed she was when she visited NIU’s campus. “I really liked how the campus wasn’t in a big city. I haven’t lived in a big municipality yet so I wasn’t sure I was ready to try out a big city,” Hamp said. “I love the coaches there and the girls are super nice. The campus is really pretty and I just felt well-appointed there.” Gymnastics is the only sport Hamp has been involved with in her life, starting at age 9 in recreational programs. She has been a member of the Twist Stars gymnastics club out of Dimondale for the past 10 years. The club competes throughout the country, but mostly within its Midwest region. “There’s something there well-nigh gymnastics I love. I love the sport and I love how it’s variegated than other sports,” she said. “It’s challenging, it’s unchangingly challenging. It never really gets easier. And as you get largest at it, you move up and you learn new things, so I like that. There’s unchangingly something increasingly to be done.” Hamp, who said her favorite event in gymnastics is the uneven bars considering it comes natural to her, credits the sport for making her every day routine successful. “I’ve learned a lot well-nigh willpower and self dedication and moreover time management,” she said. “Our practices are usually four to five hours long, so coming from a full day of school and then having practice, you don’t have a lot of time for school work so I had to stay focused and manage my time during school.” The NIU Huskies, which play in the Mid-American Conference, are coached by Sam Morreale, who has been the throne of the program since 2011. He has had much success with his gymnasts, earning top 10 team scores and recording 17 of the school’s individual event scores during his six seasons as throne coach. He has moreover led his program to the top two highest scores in school history. Barr said Hamp is a prime example of what the school is trying to succeed with its senior class, which is uncontrived them to higher education. “Our school resurgence plan is for 100 percent of our seniors will wield or shepherd a four-year university or an educational program (beyond upper school),” Barr said. “Obviously, Natalie signing a letter of intent to play Division 1 at NIU, this helps us towards our goal here at IHS and we’re certainly proud of her accomplishments.” Hamp is hoping to be a valued freelancer in her first year with the Huskies, setting lofty goals for herself already. “I want to make a positive impact on the team. My main goal is hopefully compete in every event if I can and try for spherical in college,” she said. “I want to be a part of the team and help the team scores and have a key role with the team.” Share This Article:IncreasinglyFromUpperSchool Sports Go To TheUpperSchool Sports SectionUnfinished businessVikings girls basketball team has renewed intensity with incoming throne coachClawing when Leave a Reply Cancel replyYou must be logged in to post a comment.
