Garofalo – Well known lecturer, gardener and fitness guru (1945-Present) BACKGROUND With the outdoor growing season now officially ended in our area, you can still protract your gardening hobby by switching to growing indoor plants. It is a unconfined way to alimony your untried thumb active. But did you know that in wing to room decorating, indoor plantings can moreover be utilized to help tenancy indoor pollution either in your home or office? HOW HOUSEPLANTS CAN IMPROVE INDOOR AIR QUALITY Very simply, plants can produce fresher air by titillating stat dioxide and releasing oxygen. This process is tabbed photosynthesis and is made possible by the plants titillating gases through pores on the surfaces of their leaves. In the 1980s, scientists at NASA, led by Dr. D.C. Wolverton, conducted experiments that confirmed that many indoor plants are worldly-wise to reduce levels of potentially harmful gaseous contaminants. Interestingly, the NASA scientists unswayable that plant roots, leaves and microorganisms in the plant soil all aid in removing trace levels of harmful gases. As a result of this work, plants are included in space stations to help reduce trace amounts of contaminants. Other researchers at universities such as Michigan State, Michigan, Pennsylvania State and Minnesota have reviewed the NASA Experiments and confirmed the results. NASA EXPERIMENTS APPLIED TO YOUR INDOOR ENVIRONMENT While NASA experiments were designed to modernize life on space stations and biospheres, our homes contain many of the same unhealthy chemicals that NASA was worldly-wise to scrutinizingly completely eliminate from the space habitats. These contaminants are found in materials that we use every day. Some examples include plastics, paints, furniture and carpeting. Also, present in our homes, are traces of chemicals that we use to wipe and maintain our home. The materials will release volatile gases into the indoor air. Some of the gaseous contaminants include: •Statmonoxide-which is present as a result of some car or furnace combustion, as well as any cigarette or cigar smoke. • Benzene-which is found in inks, oils and pigments virtually the home. It is moreover found in gasoline and many pharmaceuticals. • Formaldehyde-which is present on many paper and wood products, kerosene and plane cigarette smoke. • Trichloroethylene (TCE) which is found in inks, paints and adhesives. • Xylene-found in rubber, leather, printing inks and many cleaning products. HOW HOUSEPLANTS ARE ABLE TO REDUCE AIR POLLUTANTS D.L. Brown — an educator at the University of Michigan Extension — describes the effectiveness of NASA’s plant experiments by explaining that most houseplants evolved from tropical forests where they received light filtered from the branches of taller trees.  These houseplants can then photosynthesize under low light often found in home conditions and still swizzle air pollutants effectively. WHICH HOUSEPLANTS ARE MOST EFFECTIVE Here is a summary of nine of the most worldwide houseplants that have been shown to reduce pollution. • SNAKE PLANT: This plant is constructive in filtering out formaldehyde. It releases oxygen at night and absorbs stat dioxide and is expressly easy to maintain — requiring minimum lighting and infrequent watering • SPIDER PLANT: Spider plants are found to be constructive in removing trace amounts of formaldehyde, benzene and stat monoxide. • ALOE VERA: This plant is unconfined for removing trace amounts of formaldehyde and benzene. Additionally, it is a medicinal plant that holds gel in its leaves and is very constructive for treating burns and surface cuts on the skin. It requires only indirect light and needs infrequent watering. • PHILODENDRON: Is constructive in titillating formaldehyde. It has the potential for a long life, needs moderate watering and some sunlight. • ENGLISH IVY: Another formaldehyde shield that is easy to grow with moderate temperatures and medium sunlight required. • BAMBOO PALM: Is constructive in minimizing stat monoxide, xylene, benzene and formaldehyde. It is a natural humidifier unconfined for areas in the home with drier air. • CHRYSANTHEMUM: A seasonal flower that is constructive in removing, xylene, ammonia, formaldehyde and benzene. It prefers unexceptionable light but not uncontrived sun. Two spare plants that are not as readily misogynist in our zone but are very constructive are: • GERBER DAISY:Constructivein eliminating stat dioxide, trichloroethylene (TCE) and benzene. With its large, colorful flowers it moreover makes a unconfined decorating option. • WARNECK DRACAENA: Can help remove trace amounts of benzene and TCE. This plant requires minimum lighting and is constructive at stereotype room temperatures. HOW MANY HOUSEPLANTS DO YOU NEED From NASA’s experimental work, it is recommended that you need 15 to 20 good size healthy houseplants in 6 to 8-inch diameter containers spread through an 1800 square foot home to modernize air quality. Also, be sure to use non-plastic containers for your plants to eliminate any gases that can form from plastic pots. A mixture of the houseplants described whilom can requite you a good combination of improved air quality coupled with unique decorator accents. MAINTAIN HEALTHY HOUSEPLANTS Your houseplants will squint and do their weightier in improving air quality in your home by keeping them healthy.
